I've done something really, really stupid.
You see there's another reason why I've been a bit slow replying to people's emails, something I haven't told you about. I'm sorry... Each day when I drop The Boy off at school, I've been secretly walking.
Next Saturday (May 11th) I'm walking 60km (38 miles) for charity. Up and down hills in the South Downs. Apparently it's beautiful, although if the "training" has been anything to go by, it might as well be 38 laps of a raw sewage plant. It came as no surprise for me to discover that I'm not a natural athlete. According to my training programme I should have been at least 5 stone lighter by this point. That hasn't quite happened...
I decided not to raise funds for an autistic charity on this one. There are more fundraisers and collections planned around the shows for that. This time I'm raising money for Rett Syndrome Research Trust UK - you may remember I mentioned them earlier in the blog. You can discover more about them here: http://www.reverserett.org.uk.
Let's just say they're an incredible charity doing all they can to find a cure for a truly awful condition.
So, this is an appeal, as you knew it was when you started...
I won't ask for any money for this blog, but if you've enjoyed reading it in some small way, I'd be grateful if you could throw some coppers at an obese man trying to keep up with other people walking 38 miles up a hill. The link to my Just Giving page is here: http://www.justgiving.com/ohjohnwilliams. Or you can donate £1/£2/£3/£4/£5/£10 by texting TBOY99 £1 (or other amount) to 70070. As an extra incentive if I reach my target of £500 I promise I will write a blog every day for a week when (if) I get back. What a saint...
That's the begging bit over. And if anyone wants any advice on anti-chafing products, I'm your man. Perhaps if I'd spent as long walking as I had researching them, I wouldn't find myself in the situation I am now. Oh, and Mars bars give you energy apparently. That means they're good for you.
STOP PRESS: THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! I'VE BEEN TOUCHED, MOVED, AND LOTS OF OTHER SUPERLATIVES THAT DON'T DO JUSTICE TO HOW I FEEL FOLLOWING MY REQUEST FOR SPONSORSHIP... I'VE DOUBLED THE AMOUNT I WANTED TO RAISE, AND I CAN'T THANK ALL THOSE WHO DONATED ENOUGH. AS A TEAM WE AIMED TO RAISE £15,000 ON THE WALK, AND THAT TARGET WAS REACHED LAST NIGHT TOO (Sunday 5 May). TO EVERYONE WHO WAS ABLE TO DONATE, JUST THE
BIGGEST THANK YOU, YOU ARE INCREDIBLE, KIND, GENEROUS PEOPLE.
This blog is about bringing up The Boy. He's 12 years old and autistic. It's written by The Dad. It's my words, my view. Other people will think differently and have different opinions. Good.
